| Bemerkungen: | ARROW Blu-Ray 2-Disc Limited Edition Blu-ray Special Features: Two presentations of The Exorcist III: the theatrical cut and the ‘Legion’ Director’s Cut. Original 2.0 stereo audio and optional 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The DTS-HD 2.0 track is intended to mimic its original stereo mix, but I would favour the DTS-HD 5.1 mix because it’s slightly more immersive. But it’s still not particularly active and sounded a little hollow, although the bass seemed better. (Please note the sound always drops to 2.0 for the inserted ‘Legion’ scenes.) Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Richard Wells. Limited Edition booklet with new writing on the film by Lee Gambin, archival articles and reviews. Disc 1: The Theatrical Cut 2K restoration of the theatrical cut of The Exorcist III, presented in High Definition. The movie was released in 2014 from a video master, so this restoration from a new 2K film scan is a considerable improvement. Skin tones are good, fine detail is better, and the film grain’s reasonable. If you own the old Exorcist Anthology Blu-ray box-set, it’s a worthwhile upgrade. New audio commentary by critics Alexandra Heller Nicholas and Josh Nelson. Audio interview with writer-director William Peter Blatty. ‘Death, Be Not Proud: The Making of The Exorcist III’ is an in-depth 2016 documentary divided into five chapters: Chapter One: A “Wonderful” Time, an interview with producer Carter DeHaven and members of the supporting cast and production crew, touching on everyone’s awareness of The Exorcist and its first sequel. Chapter Two: Signs of the Gemini, an interview with actor Brad Dourif where he’s candid about Jason Miller’s sudden involvement and ‘sharing’ of his character. Chapter Three: The Devil in the Details, an interview with production designer Leslie Dilley and others, talking about pops, SFX, and the sets. Chapter Four: Music for a Padded Cell, an interview with composer Barry De Vorzon, who wasn’t a popular choice for producer Carter DeHaven. Chapter Five: All this Bleeding, interviews about the additional shoot and special effects, which show a marked difference in opinion between those who worked on the excised sequences and those who worked on the reshoots. The Exorcist III: Vintage Interviews. These are archival interviews with cast and crew members including William Peter Blatty, producer James Robinson, actors George C. Scott, Jason Miller, Grand L. Bush, and Ed Flanders. These are all interesting and definitely worth checking out, with some amusing anecdotes and intriguing contemporaneous thoughts on “The Exorcist 1990” (as it was known at the time of recording). ‘Falling Down a Long Flight of Steps’, an interview with SFX artist Randy Moore. The Exorcist III: Vintage Featurette. An old Making-Of documentary with onset footage and more interviews. Deleted scenes, alternate takes and bloopers. Disc 2: The ‘Legion’ Director’s Cut High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation of the ‘Legion’ director’s cut, assembled from the best available film and video elements. The restoration of the original cut is utilised in this director’s cut of the movie, but all the reinstated scenes are from VHS dailies and it doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s difficult to watch this version if you’re an audio-visual purist because it’s like someone’s haphazardly shoving in a bad late-1980s videotaped version of the film from a muddy TV channel. The inserts are also pillar-boxed to 4:3 ratio. Brand new ‘Legion’ audio commentary with esteemed film critics Mark Kermode and Kim Newman. Deleted Prologue, an alternate opening to ‘Legion’ with option audio commentary from Mark Kermode and Kim Newman. |
