Inhalt: Dokumentarfilm über Edith Bouvier Beale und ihre Tochter Edie, Verwandte von Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Mutter und Tochter leben in der heruntergekommenen, 28-Zimmer-Villa "Grey Gardens" in East Hampton. Edith Beale ist eine echte Aristokratin, Edie war eine vielversprechende, atemberaubend schöne Schauspielerin. Sie scheren sich nicht um die Behörden. Beide Frauen sind stark voneinander abhängig. Über ihren exzentrischen Lebensstil haben David und Albert Maysles einen Dokumentarfilm im Stil des so genannten Direct Cinema gedreht.
